"Look - I don't care about your business."

Wow. How could someone say that to me? The nerve.

That was my initial thought when a Facebook Friend said this to me. I appreciated the honesty, but I would be lying if I said it didn't sting a little. I have been pouring my heart and soul into my business for the last 18 months, how come she didn't want to see what I was working on for my business on social media? 

But I sat back and really thought hard about it. I suddenly understood what she was saying. It was like a lightbulb turned on. My Facebook Friends were there before I started my business. And honestly, most of them don't care about what I do for a living. 

Let that sink in for a moment. I'd say that 90% of my Friends don't give a shit about my business. At the time of writing this post, I have 591 Friends on Facebook. 10% of 591 is 59. I can promise you that 59 of my personal friends have not reached out to me about my business. So WHY am I going to write about my business on my personal page? Think about it. 

You will hear all sorts of advice from other Entrepreneurs. So who am I to say that what I am saying is right? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I am losing out on thousands of dollars a month by not networking to my existing circle of Friends. But it doesn't feel right. 

Besides, my ideal clients aren't my personal Facebook Friends anyways. So if you are running your own business, it is probably a good idea to stop and think about whether or not your existing Facebook Friends are who you are trying to convert to clients. If not, just leave them alone.
